Edo, mid-19th century. 37 1/2” length, Papier mache with a thin textured fabric (?) overlay simulating basket weave. The lid and case top interface with perfect fit verifying the originality of the overlay. Black lacquered with faded gold/yellow cipher identifying the owner. Opposing ears for silk carrying cord with two fine tassels. The interior gloss black finished. Excellent.
