The period of building the great cathedrals and castles of Europe. Iron, very skillfully made with rectangular eye to the top, above tapered baluster shaft, stepped transition and elongated conical pendant. 7” length. Excavated and stabilized. Construction of the great cathedrals required transferring dimensions from the heights of the structure (Lincoln Cathedral is 623 feet high) to the base where they were verified or adjusted. This instrument performed that task. Its condition suggests that its cord broke and it dropped into the mud at the base of the building where it lay until it was found centuries later.
