18th century. Thick translucent hide, 8 1/4" dia., of shallow domed form with an upturned edge. Four deeply domed radially incised scalloped edge iron bosses serving as blade catchers and anchoring the grip mounts to the back. Reverse with original leather handgrips and portion of the shoulder strap. Considerable lacquered finish, and old collection number. Body warped as usually found. Bosses with dark patina. Held in the left hand to parry a blow and allow for a fatal attack.
