19th century or perhaps earlier. This sword carries on the tradition of the cup hilted rapier in Spain which began in the 17th century. Its 33 ¾” double-edged blade is made for cutting and thrusting. The brass cup and guard are functional with minimal decorative enhancement. During the period, the rapier was still carried in some areas and matters of honor were settled by duel. This example shows significant honest wear and use, perhaps from such a history. In any event, it is a genuine example with great age character.
