Gilt brass hilt decorated throughout with tendrils and flowers. The double shell guard edges and knuckle bow with the curved and scrolling elements based on sea shell forms, that characterize the Rococo movement which originated in France at the time. Considerable original fire gilt surface remaining, contrasting with the patinaed recesses of the deep relief decoration, further emphasizing the depth and sense of movement. 32 ¾” diamond section blade. The forte decorated further rococo foliage and lineal grooves emphasized with hound’s tooth banding, a little worn from use.  Impressive example of the transition from the rapier to smallsword and introducing the rococo elements which replaced Louis IV styling.
