A genuine example of the 1715 Rebellion period, one of three purchased by us at a Jumble Sale in Inverness about 1985. It is 26 1/4” in length plus. The tang with four workman’s marks (notches) and remnants of the wood grip core or shims. Double fullered back-edged blade with an inscription in each fuller, each side, obscured by encrustation. The first 7” fairly well preserved and the balance eroded with loss of length. These blades were invariably imported, most produced in Germany. The condition is consistent with swords hide in roof thatch after the final defeat at Culloden in 1746, in anticipation of yet another rebellion. A wonderful piece of history with a story of its own. We’ve cherished it these many decades.
