The standard pattern in fine condition throughout including its undamaged scabbard with virtually complete original black finish. The unmarked blade bright and the silver wire wrapped grip are excellent. The pommel with the officer’s initials. This pattern was adopted the year after Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Hohenzollern heir assumed the throne of Prussia. It was used through World War I and this example has been modified by the removal of the royal cipher from the grip. As well, the shield on the breast of the Prussian eagle on the guard has had the cipher professionally polished off. The condition suggests that it was surrendered during the war. Anti-German sentiment would explain the removal of its royal ciphers which suggests that it likely was displayed in an American veteran’s association hall, American Legion (est 1919), or Veterans of Foreign Wars. About as good as they come.
