Carolingian, the period of Charlemagne (crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 800 by Pope Leo III) and his successors. 6 3/8”length with slightly curved cutting edge and pointed leading edge. Swelled bolster and keystone shaped socket. Excavated with textured surface and good profile. Stable dark surface. Originally mounted on a long pole, these were effective against mounted and troops afoot. Very rare.
