Brass hilt with boat-shaped guard (so-called as they resemble sauce{gravy} boats) and recurved crossguard. Copper wire wrapped grip. 32 ½” concave-faced triangular blade sparsely decorated with foliage, military trophies and the owner’s monogram, in gold on blued ground. The blue mostly intact, faded, with surface oxidation to one face, half-length. The decoration crisp with the gold quite strong. This is the sword of a military officer, of fighting proportions, privately purchased as all officer’s sword were.  American officer’s of the period would have worn European swords such as this and it may well have served in both the French and Indian War and the Revolution.
