This example represents the left hand dagger in evolutionary form. The blade is deeply grooved and decoratively pierced to optimize strength for its weight. The hilt employs balusters and ball terminals to the cross guard to engage an opponent’s blade. It is a product of the evolution of swordsmanship among Italian fencing masters who led the Western World in technique and regard. It was held in the left hand with the thumb resting on the blade base and the arm fully extended to menace the opponent.
