This forged iron hilt is one of two from the Collection of Sir Frank Bowden at Thame Park, Oxfordshire England. Both were at the same stage of completion when work was stopped, almost certainly as a result of Scott’s defeat at Culloden. It is 6” in height including the counterguards and comprised of several individually forged pieces skillfully forge welded together. The left side has a circular panel “rein opening”. It is of Glasgow form with broad bars and panels which were intended to be reeded, scalloped, and pierced had the work not been stopped. The disarmament of the Scotts after Culloden was rigorously pursued where the disarming act of 1716 was ineffective and the 1725 act only marginally successful. Sword making, for a time, was discontinued and this incomplete hilt is one of the results.
