Coptic Period. Large example of stone or terra cotta, over 1 ½” (1.58”). Bun form with decorative line work incised which suggests stone rather than terra cotta. Originally mounted with a long rod. Raw fiber was bunched on a distaff and drawn by hand into a thread connected to the whorl staff which wound it into string or thread, subsequently stored on the staff.
