Ex Sir Cecil Armitage Collection, Late 19th century. Brass metal, 3 1/8” length. One piece with handle in three ranks, a trapezoid over two hexagons, each with centered nub and reeded edges. Circular bowl below. Dark patina and some defects, still, a spectacular example warranting Armitage’s interest. Gold dust was the currency of the slave trade, in which the Ashanti were very active at the time. The Market was primarily the plantations in South America which purchased slaves after the turn of the century.
