Circular, 0.75" diameter modeled as a dolphin headed sea serpent with a scaled body. Intricately constructed and finished with a central hinge for application to the pierced ear. Upon rotation, the tail snaps into the mouth of the dolphin and locks. The dolphin was feared and venerated by Romans and is highly visible in their mythology. Mosaics depict the dolphin as toothy and menacing. As seafarers, Romans understood the bond between dolphins and sailors and many tales of dolphin rescues and assistance are recorded. This variety is a bottlenose dolphin and typical to the Roman style, the snout is exaggerated.  As with virtually all gold jewelry, it is alloyed and of unknown carat content but definitely gold with fine perfectly preserved finish. Truly museum worthy. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
