Gilt bronze, just under 5/8” in total height. An armorial device, nesting crescents [?] indicative of a noble owner. It appears to be two inverted crescents that would refer to distinguished military service of the owner’s forbears against Muslims during the crusades. During the Third Crusade (1189-1192,) France, allied with England and the Holy Roman Empire retook Acre and Jaffa, but failed to retake Jerusalem. It is in this crusade that Richard I (The Lionheart) of England was captured, while his brother John, ruthlessly ruled England, the basis for the Legend of Robin Hood.
