2nd-5th century AD. Gilt bronze, size 13 ½ with 1.4mm deeply rounded face band. Raised circular bezel with fire altar flanked by two figures. Classic representation. See Ancient Rings, Pollio, p.79-80 where he discusses that motif on Roman rings suggesting a cross culture influence from the Sassanians. As Romans and Sassanians (from Persia) were almost continuously at war, we believe it is more reasonable to identify these rings as Sassanian in the Roman style. There is no evidence of Zoroastrianism being practiced in Rome and the concept of even enemies, borrowing styles is very common in history.
