See The American Sword, Peterson #53. Probably the most sought standard pattern American sword. Produced by Ames, the ricasso with markings obscured. Reverse clearly dated 1862. Ames was notorious for very lightly struck marks, many of which were only partially legible when new. 26” broad fullered curved blade with some patterned oxidation intrusion, evidently stored partially wrapped, perhaps in oil cloth, producing isolated condensation. Brass hilt with issue numbers to the quillon. Short edge crack to the guard.
