European or American c.1770. Brass hilt with P form guard and ribbed leather covered grip made without wire wrap. 33 ½” broad fullered curved s.e. blade. Good uniform aging with a congealed surface to the grip. Hilt excellent. Blade with gray patina, minor pitting, and very superficial scratches. Unmarked but for a faint possible bark at the left forte. That is consistent with European blade production and possibly indicative of a European blade imported for American mounting as was common. See Neumann #48.S for a hanger with similar hilt but made with side bars. Good Revolutionary War character.
