Possibly earlier. Large example, 14” length, forged iron with tapered base spike pierced with two scrolling end cross bars for seating into a log or stump. Octagonal face plate. Used in the field to restore sword edges and armor plate as needed. Superficial rusting only. The top plate interestingly textured from multiple applications of an edged tool, rather than hammer struck. That indicates a technique for dressing sword blades unknown in literature to us. Rare and worthy of research.
