Type known as a rum keg, swigler or rundlet. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Neumann, p.62.  6 3/8” length, skillfully made by lathe turning from a single piece. Inset wood ends, one round and one oval to allow them to be inserted and seated inside. That form was achieved by compressing the unseasoned wood after turning to gradually reform to the oval shape. The ends secured with iron bands (one lacking). Two shrink cracks as common, mended with pine pitch. Original red barn paint.
