Late 19th-early 20 century lancet. Made by Miller Bros Cut Co. Meridan and so marked on the ricasso. That company was active 1872-1926. These lancets or scalpels were produced by a number of companies dating to the Civil War and later and used surgically, as well as ink scrapers to erase India ink which was lamp black in a binder and did not soak into the paper or velum to which it was applied. This example is marked U. S. P. O. DEPT. and was used on parcels. The only such example we have encountered.
