That is because, unlike other cultures, Indians mounted arrow points by splitting the shaft and securing the point with sinew lash. Virtually all other tanged arrowheads were mounted by drilling or burning a hole in the shaft in which the tang was seated. Very little is known about Indian metal forging. In the early 19th-century Indian agency facilities including the one at Ft. Winnebago, where blacksmithing was taught to Indians in the expectation that cultural and lifestyle improvements would result in reduced tribal wars. The best known products of those shops are the pipe tomahawks made from gun barrels.
