Intricately detailed bronze hilt with plumed helmet pommel and ivory grip scrimshawed with the owners monogram. 28” double edged blade decorated half its length with owner’s name, Masonic symbols crusades scene and retailer’s name, J R PETTIS & CO TROY NY, all on gold ground. While we haven’t been able to get precise dating on that company, we found an 1879 catalog describing extensive Masonic material, so it at least was well established by that date. The manufacturing techniques, as well, suggests dating of about 1880. Elaborately mounted scabbard with the owner’s name, is dark with no damage.  Excellent quality early example.
