Lake Superior Basin. Copper Culture Indians mined in the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale. Surviving artifacts include weapons, tools and beads, however, any in private hands are quite rare. Dating 7000-1000 BC, are from a small group of Copper Culture Indian artifacts from the Indian Ridge Museum, Elyria, Ohio, ex. Col. Raymond Vietzen collection. Heavy awl pike forged from a natural copper deposit to a square section and tapered from the middle. Originally mounted in a natural wood haft and capable of inflicting a mortal wound to a medium size animal or man. Probably used for deer hunting.
