European made, based on the US patterns with a brass hilt, grip of “1840” type and blade of “1860” type. Completely unmarked, these were made by the same German makers who supplied swords for the Federal government but were produced unmarked to avoid scrutiny from the North. The brass hilt plated, probably later for display in a GAR or other veterans post. Those organizations disbanded as the members aged and passed away. The trophies, souvenirs, and relics fell into the hands of the families of the veterans and eventually came to market, some in the 1950’s. This example is typical for these.
