Classic colonial hanger refurbished for military service. The leather covered grip with back strap and base ferrule relief decorated in foliage and faces or masks in the Louis IV, The Sun King fashion, but distinctive perfunctory provincial execution. The base with original quillons removed to lengthen the grip for better purchase. Below, a shell guard with scroll terminal cross guard, made in this unique configuration and showing unfinished sand casting to the back of the guard. The 24 ¾” blade of asymmetrical section with broad back fuller to the left side corresponding to a raised ridge, flanked by concave faces, on the right. A truly lethal cut and thrust form in contrast the to the wedge section blades on civilian hanger of the period.
