Revolutionary War period or before. 2 5/8” length of black japanned papier-mâché. The lid inlaid (complete) with a pewter border and central escutcheon. Excellent preservation for the period. These were used to carry snuff or pipe tobacco interchangeably. Pewter foil inlay on a black japanned body is the most common construction and takes many forms.
