CIVIL WAR IRON CALTROP

Cavalry played an important role in many Civil War battles. When practical (hard ground was needed) caltrops were used to disable cavalry horses. They were also strewn on roads to disrupt troop and supply movements. A favorite type were these small cast examples, just over an inch long which were light enough to to stay embedded in the horses hoof. We have several examples picked up near the Civil War battlefields which we visited in the 1970s. Excellent with stable dark surface patina and minor surface rust only. Each.. 1 1/4 with six elongated pyramidal spikes. Scattered to disable cavalry horses. Have a few left. Excellent condition. Each.
