CHINESE RIVER PIRATE DAGGER C.1850
|
|
Item Number: 10-66
The 19th century saw rampant piracy along the
desolate stretches of the Yangtze River which penetrates nearly 4000 miles into
Chinas
interior and served as the principle carrier for goods from the interior. Sailors wore thick brigandines for protection
and pirates carried thick bladed knives, suited to close quarters fighting and
equally capable of penetrating the brigandine or slitting a throat. This example has a fine thick wedge section
blade with back ridge and waisted root
with diamond faceted heel. The
heavy brass hilt and one piece wood grip provide balance as well as protection
for the hand. The original heavy leather
scabbard with copper rivet gussets has no provision for suspension as it served
to protect the blade (which retains its
razor sharp edge) when not in use and was left behind when the dagger
was used. Surface wear to the scabbard. The dagger, about as nice as they come.
