FRENCH CUIRASSIERS SWORD

Price: Sold
Item Number: 09-887
The Waterloo Museum was founded in 1991 and dedicated by The Duke of Wellington to house and display relics of the Battle of Waterloo along with a diorama of the battle represented with 20,000 model soldiers. Its distinguished founder and Waterloo scholar, Derek Saunders, visited the battlefield many times between 1979 and 1984 conducting excavations including excavating the well at Hougomont, the first of the three farms taken by Napoleon. Failing health forced the closing of the museum shortly after its opening and its contents were sold. Items are from the Waterloo Museum and accompanied by certification.

M AN XI.  37 straight s.e. blade with deep double fullers, bears two ordnance marks to the forte and Mfure Impale du Klingenthal Coulaux Freres Entrep along the back.  The Coulaux manufacturers designation dates it to 1810 or later and the Imperial designation dates it 1814 or earlier, thus it is C.1810-14.  Wire wrapped grip in good condition with leather complete.  Dark patina to the pommel (ordnance marked at left).  Guard and lower grip ferrule lacking.  Blade quite crisp with dark patina.  Undoubtedly picked up quite soon after the battle as local farmers converted many of these to work knives.
