A SPANISH DUELING RAPIER 1700-1750

Price: Sold
Item Number: 10-755
In the second half of the 17th century, the evolution of the rapier produced the military rapier as well as a series of much lighter forms which subsequently evolved into the small sword. By 1700, a third specific purpose variation, far rarer, the dueling rapier had evolved. It was a purely thrusting weapon which served the highly structured sword exercises which developed through a century and a half of refinement by the Italian masters. This example is Spanish dating to about 1700-50. The hilt is brass, probably gilt originally with a deep cup incorporating front and rear guards meeting the slightly recurved cross guard. The pommel is olive form, a favorite for the period. The grip is wrapped with copper wire. An earlier rapier blade is utilized as is virtually always the case. It is 35, diamond section with deep fullers marked with an indistinguishable motto. In well preserved condition for the period with a little scaly old black oxidation to the blade. It most interestingly shows a cluster of parallel impacts to the cup just above the blade, testimony to its use and evidence of the highly structured form of fencing used in the duels it fought.
