A SPANISH CUP-HILT RAPIER C.1660-80
Item Number: 09-917
This fine rapier is an exact companion to the noted example in the Tower of London Collection, inventory number IX-793, illustrated in Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London, plate 34c, clearly a product of the same workshop and perhaps both made as part of a specific order, matching in all details and measurements. The cup guard and long straight cross guard represent the ultimate fighting form for the period. In contrast to its plain exterior, the lovely interior guarda polvo would be revealed when it was worn sheathed and to the owner when in use.
