When Captain James
Cook undertook his first voyage to the South Seas in 1778 the feat was
no less daring than our first voyage to the moon and was followed by
the English public with equal interest. The extraordinary people of the
South Seas and their lifestyle, enhanced by the fact that many were in
social turmoil, became subjects of immense interest. It was the period
of Kamehamha I who, by 1795 had conquered all but two of the major
islands. The voyages and sites were chronicled by series of engraved
scenes and ethnographic subjects which were sold to the eager public so
far as they could afford them. The following is from a lifetime
collection of those original prints dating to the period of Cooks
voyages. They have lost none of their fascination and are particularly
interesting for their Hawaiian connection. These are original fine art
prints of well known subjects represented in numerous museums
throughout the world. We have priced all of these significantly below
current retail prices to liquidate the collection and brighten the
lives of our good customers! As with all our original prints, these are
mounted and double matted ready for framing in full archival materials
to preserve and protect them. Foremost among the chroniclers was The
Whole of Captain Cooks Voyages & c. published by Alexander Hogg
circa 1780. Items 1039-41 are original prints from that series which
was published during Cooks third voyage, each with plate size of
approximately 9 x 13 3/4.
