COLIMA FUNERARY WHISTLE 200 B.C.-250 AD
|
|
Item Number: 07-904
The funerary rites of
the Colima of Western Mexico (C.300 B.C-600 A.D.) required that the
deceased be interned in the presence of friendly spirits with
unfriendly spirits driven away. To accomplish this, the funeral
procession played terra cotta whistles resembling human skulls, capable
of producing several notes. This example, of characteristic dark orange
terra cotta, retains considerable black polished finish surfaces as
found on Colima pottery and seen on vessels and canine figures. 2.20
length.
Layaway is available for this item.
