A NORTH ITALIAN RAPIER C.1620

Price: $6,800.00
Item Number: 09-590
This elegant sword was made for civilian use in accordance with the evolving fencing styles of the day which originated in Italy.  The large well balanced hilt provides protection on both sides with pierced plates.  While similar in proportions to the large military rapiers used by cavalry, this example has a slender blade designed for thrusting and the blood duel.  The blade is by the Spanish maker, TOMAS AIALA and so marked in the fullers.  The slender blades used in civilian dueling could break and Spanish blades were highly regarded and used extensively in Northern Italy.  Two further example of Italian rapiers with blades by Thomas Aiala are in the Wallace collection, #A567 and #A643.   GC.237

Blade length:  35 1/4"
