A NORTH ITALIAN COMB MORION C.1580

Price: $7,700.00
Item Number: 10-625
This example epitomizes the morion at its zenith in Northern Italy with its two piece skull surmounted by an exceptionally high elegant roped edge comb. It is etched overall in panels of foliage with a central mounted warrior one side and a display of arms the other. The comb is decorated with a panel bearing a shield and battle axe inscribed IHS. Opposite is an image of the Sacred Heart. The sacred heart symbol was transformed from its mystical origins to an acetic symbol in the first half of the 16th century. It, along with other Catholic symbols served to reaffirm Catholic doctrine and distinguish it from the recently founded Protestantism. That division would subsequently erupt into the 30 Years War.
