AN ITALIAN SWEPT HILT RAPIER C.1600
Item Number: GC.A.008
This is a fine example of the swept-hilt rapier as it evolved into larger form suitable for fighting on horseback. Its blade bears the name of noted Spanish maker THOMAS AYALA and was imported as many were. Its extreme length is balanced by the large faceted pommel. It portends the form popular two decades later in Northern Europe, known as the Pappenheimer.
Blade length: 39 1/8
Extended Layaway is available for this item.
This elegant sword was made for civilian use in accordance with the evolving fencing styles of the day which originated in Italy.
This sword’s blade derives directly from the cinquenda popular in the 15th century.
This rapier was produced for personal protection and is intended for use on foot. The hilt is of a rare form (Norman #31). An example in the Wallace Collection, A627, identified as North Italian C.1600, is mounted with a hilt of identical form.
