AN ITALIAN RAPIER C.1590-1620
Item Number: 10-853
This is a further example of the crab claw rapier representing an extreme of the form. The hilt is finely detailed with vertical ribs on the guard echoing the fluting of the pommel. The blade is in three stages with rounded hexagonal ricasso stepped to a flattened diamond section with a further step reducing the section slightly. Its relatively light weight makes this a very effective weapon in the hands of an experienced swordsman. Blade length: 32" GC.116

This is a fine example of the swept-hilt rapier as it evolved into larger form suitable for fighting on horseback.
This example derives from an interesting group of swords and daggers which evolved in Italy around 1600 and was popular for the first half of the 17th century.
This rare form is evidently unclassified in literature and a variation of the “full hilt” with the addition of a top bar joining the back quillon and made without a forward quillon.
