AN ITALIAN IRON MACE C.1550
Item Number: 09-598
This mace is from a well known group which, along with other variations, evolved from the much smaller Gothic maces in response to ever increasing armor thickness. The six semicircular flanges have scored edges for better purchase. They are connected mechanically to the hollow haft with keyed projections at each end. A hole above the grip accommodated a wrist loop to prevent its loss if dislodged from the owners hand. It was used on horseback against an opponent protected by a shield in an exchange of blows thoroughly practiced by both combatants. Greater skill or strength were advantages which could be depended on but any caprice from a misstep of the horse to a flash of reflected sun could present the opportunity for a devastating blow. This is a fine example of the swept-hilt rapier as it evolved into larger form suitable for fighting on horseback.

Classic example for the Gioco Del Ponte, the Pisan bridge tournament first fought in 1568.
This example epitomizes the morion at its zenith in Northern Italy with its two piece skull surmounted by an exceptionally high elegant roped edge comb.
