AN ENGLISH RAPIER C.1660
Item Number: 09-922
The events of the first half of the 17th century, including the proliferation of firearms, the Thirty Years War and the English Civil Wars brought great changes in weapons. Heavy rapiers were replaced by lighter rapiers including the slender thrusting cup-hilts and the so called transitional rapiers which mounted cut and thrust blades to lighter hilts. This is an example of that last form as it evolved in England. The symmetrical hilt without knuckle bow was used as early as 1635 and popular by 1660. This example is in particularly good preservation with a fine lustrous patina, faded from blue and crisp detail. The delicately pierced shell guards are formed by alternate circular and concave sided square openings, preserved as when newly made.
Blade length: 32"
