AN ENGLISH PIKEMANS ARMOR C.1620-40
|
|
Item Number: 08-699
This armor predates
and certainly must have served in the English Civil Wars. It comprises
six pieces, including its original gorget. It dates to the period of
transition from lighter armor to shot proof. The breast-plate is
provided with lugs for the attachment of a reinforcing plate allowing
flexibility to adapt from guard to combat mode. See item #698,
following for a related reinforcing breast-plate. It is mounted on an armor stand with a original antique coat of a Yeoman of the
Guard, the kings or queens personal bodyguard.
Backplate with makers marks RR with canted serifs, probably Richard
Rathbone who worked in London 1617-36.
Extended Layaway is available for this item.
|
This fine armor was intended to be equally suitable for war or the tournament. For the tournament, it is designed for foot combat in which two adversaries fought armed with poleax or broadsword.
|
This backplate is from an armor of exceptional quality and a type which evolved in south central Europe in the mid 16th century.
|
The brim, etched in strapwork filled with scrolling foliage is struck with a makers mark. The burgonet was the helmet of choice for military use throughout Germany.
