A LATE 16TH CENTURY GERMAN MILITARY SABER
Item Number: 09-589
This sword is of a type which evolved in the late 16th century in response to changing fighting techniques. It was carried by a foot soldier in partial armor to attack an opponent similarly protected. Variations include examples with shell guards to the right side as well as rings, as with this example. The blade is large and heavy enough to inflict damage to the lightly protected arms and hands and its cutting edge is effective at slashing any less protected areas. The decoration of the blade with mythological figures, including the Man in the Moon, were thought to bring good fortune to the owner. An example of the same type in the Tower of London collection (IX-159) bears the same markings. GC.239
Blade length: 33
