A GERMAN SWEPT-HILT RAPIER C.1600-25

Its high rounded upper hilt bar dates this rapier to the first quarter of the 17th century. It is a swept hilt of advanced form and superior quality. It was produced in Germany but may well have served in any of the Northern European countries, as German rapiers were extensively exported. The blade bears a makers mark to each side of the ricasso.

This sword is from a well known group studied by A. V. B. Norman. Evidently all were made in Munich and among others, served the the Munich Town Guard.

This is a fine example of the swept-hilt rapier as it evolved into larger form suitable for fighting on horseback.

This rare form is evidently unclassified in literature and a variation of the “full hilt” with the addition of a top bar joining the back quillon and made without a forward quillon.
