A GERMAN BURGONET C.1570
|
|
Item Number: 08-1113
One piece skull with
high comb and integral rolled edge brim struck with a makers mark L R
over additional ciphers, perhaps K R and the Nuremberg town mark.
Rolled edge neck guard pierced for hanging and hinged cheek pieces
pierced with a cluster of holes for hearing. The surface finely hammer
finished and blued. Of munition grade and representing the burgonet in
its most basic form for the period, this helmet is distinguished by the
preservation of nearly all of its original blued finish. The high
points presented by the hammer stipple are faded to a complimentary
smooth gray. The crest only was originally file finished and that
finish is completely preserved as well.
Extended Layaway is available for this item.
|
This example, of fine flamboyant form, is from a distinctly identifiable group, showing superior quality. The deep domed skull has a high broad "white" crest with roped edge.
|
On the right side is a mythological lion, the left a griffin. Most original gold remains. The skull, brim, cheek pieces and neck guard are all etched in matching scrolling foliage on pellet ground.
|
The brim, etched in strapwork filled with scrolling foliage is struck with a makers mark. The burgonet was the helmet of choice for military use throughout Germany.
