A FRENCH LEFT-HAND DAGGER, C.1620
|
|
Item Number: GC.A.004
This dagger was used to parry with a rapier in the right hand. Its proportions reflect the Italian taste while its pierced hilt elements suggest a French origin. The blade is specifically designed for thrusting identifying it as an offensive weapon in contrast to earlier forms which were used largely to defend from an opponents thrust.
Blade length: 13 1/4
Provenance: The Boston Museum of Fine Art
Extended Layaway is available for this item.

This charming dagger incorporates a fluted shell guard above the conventional ring guard in a deceptively pleasing arrangement.
|
This example derives from an interesting group of swords and daggers which evolved in Italy around 1600 and was popular for the first half of the 17th century.
