A 17TH CENTURY OTTOMAN TURKISH MACE
|
|
Item Number: 08-695
This iron mace
epitomizes early Ottoman craftsmanship with its finely crafted detail.
The twelve flanges, probably an astrological choice, are delicately
shaped with convex striking edges on a stepped recurve. Its form draws
heavily on the European as, unlike other Eastern maces, it was made
specifically to attack fully armored European soldiers. It is likely
that it served at the Battle of Vienna of 1683 and comprised part of
the spoils gathered by German and Polish defenders after the Turkish
defeat.

12th century. Dating to the period of the later Crusades as well as conflicts in Europe, this mace is of near spherical form with a band of pyramidal shaped projections covering the effective striking area of its surface.
|
Forged iron, 2 1/4” width. Concave interface to seat it on the wood haft. The perimeter is forged in a series of angled elongated pyramidal projections flanked by pairs of smaller projections.
|
This example represents the virtual reinvention of the mace. Thicker and more extensive use of iron plate dictated that the energy of a blow be concentrated rather than distributed as with a two or three point contact.
