SCOTTISH REGIMENTAL BROADSWORD C.1800-20

This sword served a soldier in a Scottish regiment of the British military. It has a leather covered grip. A makers mark to the blade suggests that it was produced in Germany as were many English swords. The failed Jacobite rebellion of 1745 resulted in the disarming of the Scots and abolition of many highland customs. The last quarter century, however, brought such widespread military pressure, that Scottish regiments were reformed within the British military. Originally fighting with their own weapons, an effort was made to standardize and this example is a result of that effort. Final standardization came with the 1828 pattern.
