Form specifically associated with the Saxon Royal Court and carried by the Trabanten Guard, the personal body guards of the Electors of Saxony. This example clearly emulates those weapons and probably was carried by the body guard of an associated, noble personage of lower status. Forged iron head of the specific, very flamboyant form of that esteemed group. See The Wallace Collection, #A 956 and A 957 for two examples from the Trabanten Guard. 94 3/4" total length. Dark oak haft with mottled patina, age grain opening and a few superficial bruises. The head with medium patina, a few isolated islands pitting blending in and good crisp profile. About as elegant as they come.
