SAMOAN WAR CLUB IN THE FORM OF AN AXE
Item Number: 08-731
First half of the 19th century. 14 3/4" length and carved from a single piece of wood in the shape of a ship carpenters axe. That form predates the machine made axes of the mid century. The integral haft of elegant early form as well. Native made weapons replicating those seen in the hands of Europeans are encountered occasionally, primarily among African cultures. This example is one of the only Oceanic examples we have encountered. They are obviously copied from Ships carpenters tools seen on visiting sailing vessels. Shows wear and use with some age encrustation.
