INDO PERSIAN HORSEMEN'S SHIELD

Mogul period, 17th-18th century. Hide or composition, 19 dia. Domed with deeply cusped upturned edge. The medial with four heavy deeply domed brass bosses (one with contemporary tip reinforcement) and a large brass ribbed crescent device. Pierced above with two holes for hanging as to lay a shield down was an act of surrender. The back with coarse burlap knuckle pad and hand grips. Shows great age. The surface with age checks, mostly to the edge but finish intact with some congealed areas. Large heavy early example which evolved into the lighter shields of the 18th and 19th centuries under colonial influence
